[Letter] 1856 July 16, Alexandria, Va. to [John Albert Broadus] / J.M. Broadus. 1856.

Scolded his brother for his "determination to refuse a professorship in the university. "To see you so obstinately (may I say) persist in being poor when you could so easily have an ample living, to see you thus persist in refusing to be placed above the pains of poverty, makes it necessary for me to look at the conscience of the case with purer eyes than most men have." Ends with: "I must not forget to relate that last week some day, I saw your acquaintance and friend Mr. Theo's Scott of Orange, and learned of him that instead of one little Maria Louisa, you have two little girls--twins." John A. Broadus was offered the chair of Greek at the University of Virginia. He refused, but accepted the chaplaincy of the University, serving 1855-1858.
